Why are there so many types of anti-blue eyewear?
In the digital age, our eyes are exposed daily to blue light from electronic screens, which can lead to eye strain, dryness, and even sleep problems. Consumers have different needs for anti-blue light spectacles depending on their daily activities and environments, which is why various types of anti-blue eyewear exist.
For example, eyewear designed to improve sleep often filters over 99% of blue light, while glasses for daily computer use typically filter about 50%.
What types of lenses are used in anti-blue eyewear?
Based on material, there are lenses made from acrylic, plastic, CR39 resin, nylon, TAC, etc. All of these materials can incorporate blue light blocking features. In terms of clarity, CR39 offers the highest transparency, followed by nylon, PC, and others.
Based on color, lenses come in fully transparent, slightly yellow, light yellow, yellow, dark yellow, and dark red options.
Based on protection level, there are three main categories:
Basic Protection (30% filtration) – Suitable for daily office work and studying
Enhanced Protection (50% filtration) – Ideal for programmers and gamers
Full Protection (85% filtration) – Recommended for heavy screen users
It’s worth noting that the claim of "100% blue light blocking" is controversial. No anti-blue eyewear has truly achieved full (100%) filtration.
Skymood anti-blue eyewear not only blocks blue light but also features UV400 coating and anti-fingerprint technology. Ordinary anti-blue light spectacles only block screen-emitted blue light (380–450nm), but sunlight also contains harmful UVA/UVB rays (100–400nm). The UV400 coating can block 100% of UV rays (≤400nm), making it suitable for outdoor use (e.g. driving, cycling) and preventing cumulative damage from UV and blue light. Why add anti-fingerprint fatures to anti-blue eyewear?
In addition to blue light protection, lenses can also be treated for oil resistance, scratch resistance, seawater resistance, anti-glare, UV400 protection, anti-reflection, and more.
Ordinary lenses easily attract fingerprints and oil, and frequent cleaning can scratch the coating. Anti-fingerprint coatings make it harder for oil and dirt to stick, allowing for easy cleaning with just a light wipe. Most importantly, they maintain lens transparency—fingerprints and dust scatter light, reducing visual clarity. Anti-fingerprint coatings ensure long-term clarity and uncompromised blue light protection.
What should be considered when designing anti-blue eyewear?
Special care should be taken when designing rimless frames. It’s recommended to use nylon blue light blocking lenses, as they have superior physical properties and are more suitable for drilling and mounting on rimless frames.
PC lenses should not be mounted on acetate frames, as the interaction between the materials can cause cracks over time. For best results, lenses should be cut using advanced CNC automatic cutting machines.
